Jeff's Square Dance Related Articles
These are articles related to Square Dancing that I have written. I recently re-found the original WORD files documents for the olders ones. Most of the newer ones have been copied from my archive of "Australian Callers Federation" newsletter "Callerlink", (which I was editor of for several years). The "date" information is based upon the "last save date" of the original documents. Some of the dates might not be correct, but should be close.
ROTATING ZEROS
From Callerlink CL207 February 2012
Rotating Zeros have the special property of moving dancers clockwise or anticlockwise around a square. They are technical zeros rather than true zeros as they change the roles of heads and sides, so you have to be aware that they only work in particular sequence states. Rotational Zeros are very useful for contras, but can also be fun to study.
EXAMPLES: (These examples assume “same sequence” state for boys and girls; they won’t work if boys and girls have different sequence states).
CLOCK WISE ROTATION:
From Lines:
(1) Pass The Ocean – Swing Thru – Boys Run – Couples Circulate – Chain down the line
From Right Hand Parallel Waves:
(3) Centres U Turn – Couples Circulate – Centres U Turn
(4) Swing Thru – Centres Trade – Centres Run – Couples Circulate – Outsides Run Right – Swing Thru – Centres Trade
From “8 Chain Thru”.
-
Use “Star Thru” to create a line, and then use (1) or equivalent.
-
Extend to a wave the use (3) or (4) or equivalent.
COUNTER CLOCK WISE ROTATION:
From Lines:
(2) Right and Left Thru – Dixie Style – Boys Trade – Left Swing Thru – Girls Trade – Girls Run Left – Couples Circulate – Bend The Line
From Right Hand Parallel Waves:
(5) Outsides U Turn – Couples Circulate – Outsides U Turn
(6) Swing Thru – Boys Run – Ladies Chain down the line – Dixie Style to a (left) wave – Boys Trade – Left Swing Thru – Girls Trade – Girls Run Left – Couples Circulate – Boys Run Right
From “8 Chain Thru”.
-
Use “Star Thru” to create a line, and then use (2) or equivalent.
-
Extend to a wave the use (5) or (6) or equivalent.
