CLAYTON'S LADIES CHAIN (CL091 February 1991)
By: Jeff Garbutt, Western Australia

The following compilation of figures is a "Clayton's Ladies Chain", (the ladies chain you have when you're not having a ladies chain). These sequences are designed for callers who have traffic patterns that require a different partner, (to original), to start with; but the caller wishes to make the lady chain set-up invisible to the dancer.

Note that the sequences bring everyone back "in sequence" to a square set, but some rotate the set. In this case it may be necessary to call "Head positions..." when starting the main figure.

Claytons is a brand name that was the subject of a major marketing campaign in Australia in the 1970s and 1980s, promoting a "the drink you have when you're not having a drink" at a time when alcohol was being targeted as a major factor in the road toll. The term Clayton's has entered into Australian vernacular where it represents a "substitute". It can also be used to describe something that is effectively in existence but does not take the appropriate name, e.g. a common-law couple might be described as having a "Claytons marriage".

DECEMBER 2012 REMASTER:

The above was written early in my calling career and contains some combinations that I would avoid now. (Such as (1) "Star Thru" after "Veer Left", (2) replaced "Dive Thru" with "Pass to the Centre" and (3) avoided use of "Zoom".) So let's try some improvement using the same general structure of the originals:
